Alibaba reportedly plans AI 3D restaurant tool to take on Meituan

Alibaba will introduce a new AI-powered tool to help restaurants create 3D images of their interiors, aiming to compete more directly with Meituan in China’s food and dining sector.

The service, offered through Alibaba’s Amap unit, will let restaurants generate 3D visuals from uploaded videos or photos, according to sources familiar with the plans.

The technology will initially be available for free to select restaurants.

The move is part of Alibaba’s push to regain share in China’s local services market, which has been led by Meituan in food delivery and restaurant reviews.

China’s major tech firms are increasingly using AI to strengthen core businesses and expand into new areas.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Amap’s 3D tool may fill a feature Dianping doesn’t promote publicly

  • Dianping is Meituan’s restaurant-review app. It features reviews, photos, and videos in public materials while leaving out standardized 3D or panoramic interior views for restaurants 1.
  • Dianping users lean on photo reviews, video clips, and text ratings to judge venues 1 which keeps visuals fragmented.
  • Amap’s developer platform already supports 3D maps and interactive features 2, so it can ship 3D restaurant visuals quickly, possibly faster than Meituan.
  • Offering it free to select restaurants follows common tactics in China’s local services market, where platforms subsidize merchants to speed uptake.

Mapping and review platforms can build cross-platform 3D content pipelines

  • Vendors can build tools that let merchants create and push 3D visuals to Amap; Baidu Maps (Baidu’s mapping app); Dianping; Douyin (TikTok’s China version); and Xiaohongshu (a lifestyle shopping social platform).
  • Amap’s developer platform offers APIs for map display; Point of Interest (POI) search; and data visualization 3 so third parties can automate 3D content uploads.
  • Since many already use Dianping for vouchers and deals 4, bundling 3D with current merchant tools can boost adoption without extra systems.
  • Investors can back companies that simplify multi-platform 3D content for small-to-medium restaurants as rivalry between Alibaba and Meituan heats up.
