Alibaba plans new unit to boost consumer use of Qwen AI models

Alibaba has announced plans to set up a new unit to promote consumer adoption of its Qwen AI models.

The Qwen Consumer Business Group, led by Alibaba vice-president Wu Jia, will manage the Qwen chatbot app, Quark AI assistant, cloud drive, AI hardware, UC Browser, and the online reading platform Shuqi.

This organizational shift merges Alibaba’s previous Intelligent Information and Intelligent Connectivity business groups, and follows the relaunch of the Qwen app in November.

Alibaba said the Qwen app, which can answer questions, transcribe audio, and generate images and videos, saw over 10 million downloads in its first week of public beta.

The company has focused on open-sourcing its Qwen models, allowing third parties to use and modify them.

During its recent earnings call, Alibaba’s CEO said the firm is advancing both enterprise and consumer AI products.
