Alibaba partners Chinese nuclear firm for data center power

Alibaba Group has formed a 250 million yuan (US$35.9 million) joint venture with China National Nuclear Power Co., according to corporate data.

This move aligns with broader industry trends where tech giants, including Meta and Microsoft, partner with nuclear firms to secure reliable power for data centers.

Alibaba has earmarked over US$53 billion for AI research and data center development, with much of that expected to go toward infrastructure expansion.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Key details about the Alibaba power venture remain unclear

  • The venture’s business scope needs to be clarified, including whether power plants will be built and operated or whether the focus will be trading plus project development.
  • Registered capital has been set at 250 million yuan ($35.9 million), which is modest for building a plant from scratch.
  • The energy source must be confirmed. While the partner is a nuclear firm, China National Nuclear Power’s business scope also includes other clean energy projects 1.
  • Capacity plans, target sites, and the schedule have not been set out, so the effect on data center supply cannot yet be measured.

China’s data center power crunch creates service opportunities

  • Tech operators and investors can use existing channels to line up low-carbon electricity, including China’s green electricity trading framework 2.
  • Specialist advisers can help negotiate long-term power purchase agreements, plus handle Green Electricity Certificates (China’s official instruments for tracking and proving the environmental attributes of renewable electricity), which are described by the National Energy Administration as the only proof of renewable electricity’s environmental attributes in China 3.
  • Energy tech firms can sell firming tools such as battery storage or energy management software, which can keep AI workloads supplied when wind or solar output dips.
