Alibaba leads $100m round in Chinese robotics startup X Square

X Square Robot, a Shenzhen-based humanoid robotics startup, has raised about US$100 million in its latest funding round led by Alibaba Cloud, with participation from HongShan, Meituan, Legend Star, Legend Capital, and INCE Capital.

The company, founded in December 2023, said this brings its total funding to about 2 billion yuan (US$280 million).

Chief operating officer Yang Qian said the firm is generating revenue from sales to schools, hotels, and retirement homes, but does not yet offer a mass-market product.

On September 8, 2025, X Square Robot introduced an open-source AI model for robotics called Wall-OSS, and unveiled its Quanta X2 humanoid robot, which features hands with pressure sensitivity and cleaning attachments.

The startup declined to share its current valuation.

Yang said the company is considering an IPO next year but has not determined a listing location.

She also said X Square Robot is in talks with customers in Japan and Singapore.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Robotics funding surge reflects strategic shift toward commercial applications

  • X Square Robot’s $100 million round arrives during an exceptional funding period for robotics, with startups securing over $2.26 billion in Q1 2025 alone2.
  • Corporate venture capital investments in robotics surged 183% year-on-year in Q1 2025, totaling $1.3 billion across 34 deals3.
  • More than 70% of this capital flowed to warehouse and industrial automation applications rather than consumer products2.
  • This pattern aligns with X Square Robot’s current revenue model, generating income from sales to schools, hotels and retirement homes rather than mass consumer markets1.
  • Major competitors have raised substantial rounds this year, including Apptronik’s $350 million and Neura Robotics’ €120 million Series B, indicating investor confidence in commercial humanoid applications3.

Pricing gaps reveal market maturation challenges despite funding abundance

  • X Square Robot’s $80,000 humanoid price tag sits between high-end competitors and mass market viability, highlighting the industry’s commercialization challenge1.
  • The pricing spread is dramatic; rival Unitree sells humanoids for $16,000 while X Square charges $80,000, suggesting significant variation in capabilities and target markets1.
  • X Square’s executives acknowledge that consumer adoption requires prices around $10,000, achievable “in three to five years” through hardware cost reductions1.
  • This timeline suggests that despite the current funding boom, practical deployment remains years away from mainstream adoption.
  • The company’s focus on institutional customers reflects the reality that current pricing only supports specialized commercial applications, not the consumer robotics vision driving much investor enthusiasm.
