Alibaba launches transaction protection service in South Korea

Alibaba.com, a business-to-business marketplace owned by Alibaba Group, has launched its Trade Assurance service in South Korea. This service aims to improve security for Korean vendors involved in international trade.

Trade Assurance employs an escrow-based payment system to reduce risks in cross-border transactions.

It covers the process from payment to delivery and features logistics and financing tools to streamline operations.

General manager of global business development at Alibaba.com Shawn Yang said that South Korea is a key market for the company due to its importance in global trade and the rising demand for Korean products internationally.

Head of global supply chain at Alibaba.com Summer Gao noted that the service addresses trust issues faced by Korean small and medium-sized enterprises in global trade.

Trade Assurance aims to enhance credibility and efficiency for sellers by showcasing transaction histories.

Yang highlighted that Alibaba.com is committed to supporting Korean sellers. This includes establishing global sales channels and collaborating with local logistics providers to improve services.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ B2B platforms prioritize trust-building mechanisms amid rapid industry growth

Alibaba’s Trade Assurance program addresses the most critical barrier for Korean SMEs entering global markets, which is the lack of trust in cross-border transactions.

This focus on trust-building through escrow payments aligns with research showing how Alibaba built its success in China by establishing market, relational, and social legitimacy among stakeholders 1.

The timing is strategic, as B2B e-commerce is experiencing significant growth, with industry projections showing 80% of B2B supplier interactions will occur online by 2025 2.

For Korean sellers specifically, this trust-building mechanism reduces barriers to international sales while improving their visibility to global buyers through transaction history verification.

The move illustrates how major B2B platforms are evolving beyond mere marketplaces to become comprehensive transaction facilitators with built-in protections that address the concerns of cross-border commerce.

2️⃣ Targeted regional expansion through localized partnerships drives competitive advantage
