Alibaba launches AI platform for enterprises

Alibaba launched Wukong, an AI-native enterprise platform for coordinating agent workflows, now available in invitation-only beta.

The company said Wukong can coordinate multiple agents to handle complex tasks and is built on enterprise-grade security infrastructure.

Wukong is the flagship enterprise AI platform developed by the Wukong Business Unit under the newly established Alibaba Token Hub (ATH) Business Group following Alibaba Group’s reorganisation.

The platform can be downloaded as a standalone desktop application or accessed as an embedded AI agent within the latest version of DingTalk, Alibaba’s enterprise collaboration platform serving over 20 million corporate users.

The company also plans integrations with Slack, Microsoft Teams and WeChat.

Alibaba said it will add modular agent skills from its ecosystem, including Taobao, Tmall, 1688, Alipay, and Alibaba Cloud, and will support third-party skill integrations.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Alibaba’s new AI platform is among the first product launches following a major corporate restructuring

  • The Wukong launch follows the rollout of Alibaba Token Hub (ATH), a new group that brings together the company’s main AI efforts 1.
  • Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu is leading the shake-up and is personally running the combined AI unit 2.
  • ATH combines teams that used to sit apart, including Tongyi Laboratory, which builds multimodal foundation models (AI models that can work across text, images, and other formats), plus the Qwen Business Unit, which builds a personal AI assistant 1.
  • Putting these groups under one roof targets faster revenue, since the name refers to tokens produced by AI models, and it follows the abrupt exit of Qwen’s star research lead Junyang Lin 3.

The platform leverages Alibaba’s ecosystem to address AI monetization challenges

  • Wukong’s enterprise push tackles a hurdle described by Bloomberg, which wrote that Chinese AI firms have had a tougher time than Western rivals like OpenAI turning AI progress into profit, partly because Chinese consumers are less willing to pay for software subscriptions 3.
  • Alibaba plans to weave Wukong into DingTalk and other messaging apps, then connect it to Taobao and Alipay so enterprise customers can use it alongside existing commercial services 3.
  • Bloomberg Intelligence analysts say the broader bundle could give Alibaba a “structural edge” over competitors with a smaller platform footprint 3.
  • The approach may also push rivals that rely on free, open-source models to offer tighter enterprise packages to win paying clients 3.
