Alibaba launches AI chip for agent-based workloads

Alibaba has announced the XuanTie C950, a new CPU meant for running AI models in data centers and handling multi-step workloads used by AI agents, as it expands its in-house semiconductor work to support its AI plans.

The company positioned the chip for inference, where models generate outputs, as CPUs handle sequential tasks while GPUs, dominated by Nvidia, are widely used to train large AI models with parallel computing.

The C950 uses the free-to-use RISC V architecture, and Alibaba’s DAMO Academy said the XuanTie line can be customized for specific inference patterns, with Alibaba claiming over 30% higher performance than some mainstream products.

Morningstar analyst Chelsey Tam said the chip could help supply chain resilience and costs but is unlikely to materially lift revenue due to production constraints, as US export restrictions on Nvidia chips push Chinese firms to develop alternatives.
