Alibaba launches AI agent to automate and cut sourcing time

Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group has launched an AI agent to help merchants with product and supply sourcing.

The tool, called Accio Agent, is designed to automate tasks such as product ideation, prototyping, compliance checks, and supplier sourcing.

Alibaba said the agent could cut down weeks of research and sourcing work to a few minutes.

The company said this could help merchants, including small businesses and solo entrepreneurs, streamline their operations.

Accio Agent is part of a broader push toward “agentic purchase,” where AI handles processes from product discovery to fulfillment.

Tech firms like Amazon are also developing similar AI agents for ecommerce.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Autonomous AI agents signal fundamental shift from search to delegation in e-commerce

The emergence of agentic commerce represents a transformation from consumers actively searching and comparing to AI systems making autonomous purchasing decisions on their behalf.

Amazon’s “Buy for Me” feature, currently in beta testing, allows AI to complete purchases from third-party websites while users remain within Amazon’s app interface1. This demonstrates how the purchasing process is evolving from manual browsing to automated delegation.

This shift extends beyond individual features to entire business strategies, with major players like Amazon, Google, and Walmart now competing to develop AI shopping assistants that can autonomously make purchases for consumers2.

The competitive intensity is evident in Amazon’s recent decision to block Google’s AI shopping bot from accessing its platform3, highlighting how control over the customer relationship becomes critical when AI agents mediate transactions.

2️⃣ Small merchants gain access to enterprise-level automation capabilities

Agentic commerce tools like Alibaba’s Accio Agent democratize sophisticated business capabilities that were previously available only to large corporations.

The automation of 70% of traditional procurement tasks—including product ideation, compliance checks, and supplier sourcing—particularly benefits solo entrepreneurs and small businesses who previously lacked resources for extensive market research teams.
