Alibaba hikes AI chip, cloud prices by up to 34%

Alibaba is raising prices for its AI computing chips and storage products by as much as 34%.

The hikes cover its T-Head AI computing chips which increase by 5% to 34%.

Its Cloud Parallel File Storage service will cost 30% more.

The moves follow a structural revamp this month aimed at shifting the group toward monetizing AI products and services.

Alibaba has also introduced new offerings such as an agentic AI service called Wukong for business customers.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Alibaba’s storage price hike may relate to a specialized AI offering

  • Alibaba sells several Cloud Parallel File Storage (CPFS) editions with different features and use cases 1.
  • One edition, “CPFS for Lingjun,” is an “invitational preview” for intelligent computing such as AI-generated content (AIGC) or autonomous driving 1. It runs only with selected Lingjun/Platform for AI (PAI)/Alibaba Cloud Service (ACS) resources, not Elastic Compute Service (ECS) instances 1.
  • Compared with the CPFS General-purpose Edition, this option targets intelligent workloads and lists ultra-high throughput plus IOPS (input/output operations per second) over an end-to-end RDMA (Remote Direct Memory Access) network 1. It marks server-side encryption as unsupported 1. It also marks encryption in transit as unsupported 1. ACL (access control list)-based access control is also unsupported 1.
  • The available materials do not say whether the reported 30% CPFS increase covers CPFS for Lingjun, the General-purpose Edition, or several editions 1.

Price increases suggest a move from market share to profit

  • Alibaba raised prices for AI computing chips and file storage used in high-performance computing, including AI training 2. That tests how much customers will pay for services tied to day-to-day operations 2.
  • Cloud Parallel File Storage bills hourly on provisioned capacity rather than stored data, so the change can lift costs for businesses committed to Alibaba’s platform 3.
  • Pulling back from price cutting suggests a push to earn more from scarce, specialized infrastructure with few substitutes.
  • Other cloud providers may follow with their own increases for niche AI or high-performance computing offerings, which could steer the sector toward profit in high-margin areas.
