Alibaba forms CEO-led tech committee to boost AI push

Alibaba Group has created a technology committee led by CEO Eddie Wu and reorganized key AI teams, according to an internal letter from Wu to staff, as competition in China’s AI model and agent market rises.

The committee includes former Alibaba Cloud CTO Zhou Jingren as chief AI architect, while group CTO Wu Zeming will focus on business technology and AI inference platforms.

Li Feifei has been appointed Alibaba Cloud CTO, effective on April 8, and will lead its technology and AI infrastructure.

Alibaba also turned its Tongyi Laboratory, which develops the Qwen large language models, into a Tongyi Large Model Business Unit led by Zhou, formalizing its role in model development, the letter said.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Alibaba’s reorg follows a “token war” view and an aggressive revenue goal

  • CEO Eddie Wu says large models hinge on token use as much as raw capability. Tokens are the units of data AI models process. He adds that enterprises may start treating token spending like a production or research-and-development cost 1.
  • Alibaba has put models, cloud infrastructure, and AI inference platforms, which are the systems that run trained models in real-world use, under one group-level technology committee. The company wants faster follow-through from that setup 1.
  • The reshuffle lands less than a month after another AI restructuring, which adds to the sense of urgency around the new direction 1.
  • A commercial target sits behind the push. Alibaba wants more than US$100 billion in annual revenue from cloud and AI commercialization, including Model-as-a-Service (MaaS), within five years 2.

The structure backs AI agents and could reshape ecommerce economics

  • The change supports a move away from classic ecommerce browsing toward agent-style AI that carries out tasks end to end 3.
  • Shoppers could rely on direct commands to an AI system rather than scrolling and clicking ads. That shift could weaken Alibaba’s ad-driven revenue model 3.
  • During the Lunar New Year period, Alibaba’s consumer-facing Qwen app processed nearly 200 million “one-sentence orders” for tasks such as food delivery 3.
  • Alibaba is pushing enterprise AI agents and a unified Qwen brand to build recurring revenue tied to task completion. Claims that this move “forces” competitors like Tencent, the Chinese internet and gaming company, to consolidate around integrated ecosystems go beyond the cited sources 1.
