Alibaba Cloud powers AI Singapore’s new LLM for regional languages

Qwen-SEA-LION-v4, a new large language model aimed at Southeast Asian languages, was developed by AI Singapore with support from Alibaba Cloud.

The model is based on Alibaba’s Qwen3-32B and has been further trained on regional language data to improve accuracy and contextual understanding.

Qwen-SEA-LION-v4 can run on a consumer-grade laptop with 32GB of RAM and is available as a free download via the AI Singapore website and Hugging Face.

According to the developers, the model ranks first on the SEA-HELM leaderboard for open-source models under 200 billion parameters.

Qwen-SEA-LION-v4 supports languages including Burmese, Filipino, Indonesian, Malay, Tamil, Thai, and Vietnamese, and uses byte-pair encoding for efficient multilingual processing.

Alibaba provided the base model and technical support, while AI Singapore contributed regional data curation and evaluation.

The launch aims to address the gap in AI models for Southeast Asia, where more than 1,200 languages are spoken.
