Alibaba Cloud opens new data centers in Malaysia, Philippines

Alibaba Cloud has opened a third data center in Malaysia and will launch a second in the Philippines by October 2025.

This expansion is part of the company’s strategy to enhance its AI and cloud infrastructure worldwide.

The company also plans to open an AI-focused center in Singapore to support global cloud expansion.

These moves are part of Alibaba’s three-year strategy to grow its AI and cloud infrastructure.

Earlier this year, Alibaba pledged $53 billion toward AI and cloud investments to meet growing computing demand.

Despite boosting cloud and ecommerce performance, rising AI costs are pressuring Alibaba’s profit margins.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Alibaba’s AI push continues a decade-long strategic investment journey

Alibaba’s $53 billion commitment to cloud and AI is actually part of a much longer technology investment roadmap dating back to 2017, when the company announced a $15 billion R&D investment focused on AI, IoT, and other emerging technologies through its DAMO Academy 1.

This consistent long-term approach shows how Alibaba has been methodically building AI capabilities while competitors were still experimenting, including early applications in healthcare diagnostics and medical imaging 2.

The investment pattern demonstrates Alibaba’s strategic patience, establishing the foundational cloud infrastructure first, then gradually layering AI capabilities on top once the technical groundwork was established.

The Southeast Asian expansion reflects Alibaba’s focus on regional markets where it has existing commercial relationships before attempting to compete directly with Western tech giants in their home markets.

2️⃣ Alibaba’s expansion reflects China’s national AI ambitions

Alibaba’s aggressive cloud and AI investments are aligned with China’s broader national goal of developing a $150 billion AI industry by 2030 3.

The company operates within China’s distinctive AI ecosystem where three dominant tech companies—Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent (the “BAT” trio)—collectively invest in over half of the nation’s major AI companies, creating a concentrated but powerful development environment 4.
