Alibaba chief: 90% of AI tech may vanish in 10 years
Alibaba’s cloud and AI unit founder, Wang Jian, has predicted that 90% of AI technologies and services developed since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT could disappear within the next decade.
Wang shared his views during an interview with Bloomberg Television.
He said that OpenAI’s introduction of ChatGPT sparked public interest in AI but also created a “bias” regarding the technology’s potential.
Wang highlighted that AI applications extend beyond chatbots. He urged developers to explore innovative uses to drive advancements.
He described the process of elimination as part of technological exploration.
Wang, a former Microsoft Research Asia scientist, joined Alibaba in 2009. He proposed the idea of a computing business to co-founder Jack Ma.
This initiative led to the creation of Alibaba Cloud, also known as Alicloud, which has grown into a US$16 billion operation.
The platform supports Alibaba’s global e-commerce and logistics operations. It also powers its AI model, Qwen, which competes with systems like GPT and Gemini.
Alibaba remains committed to developing AI technologies as part of its ongoing investment in AI.
