Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai said the US-China competition in AI should not be seen as a winner-takes-all race, during his appearance on the All-In podcast last month.

Tsai argued that success in AI will depend on how quickly companies and countries can adopt the technology, rather than who builds the most advanced models.

He noted that Chinese businesses using AI rose to 50% this year, up from 8% last year, citing a survey.

Tsai said China’s approach to building cost-effective, open-source AI models is conducive to faster adoption compared to the US, which spends tens of billions of dollars on large models.

Tsai also said about 30% of code at Alibaba is now generated by AI.

He added that a more predictable regulatory environment in China has benefited Alibaba’s operations.
