Alibaba CEO to lead new AI-focused business group

Alibaba named Eddie Wu, Alibaba Group chief executive, to lead a newly formed Alibaba Token Hub (ATH) business group, the company said.

ATH will combine Tongyi Laboratory, the MaaS Business Line, the Qwen Business Unit, the Wukong Business Unit, and the AI Innovation Business Unit.

Alibaba said ATH’s mission would be to “create, deliver, and apply tokens” and that it would focus on building AI-native work platforms for enterprises.

The announcement comes weeks after Lin Junyang, who led Alibaba’s Qwen AI model division, announced his departure and was the third senior Qwen executive to exit this year.

The move places several AI units under Wu’s oversight.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Alibaba’s AI is already powering a diverse global business

  • Alibaba’s Qwen model family runs in products worldwide. It powers smart lighting for Signify in the Netherlands, helps Alibaba Cloud tools for Japan’s manga industry, and underpins a Singapore language model from AI Singapore (a government-backed national AI program) built on the Qwen foundation model 1.
  • Alibaba Cloud offers Qwen models plus services for coding, image editing, audio analysis, and video generation, going beyond text output 2.
  • Alibaba says it shares open-weight Qwen models with developers through Hugging Face (a popular AI model-sharing platform) and ModelScope (Alibaba’s model-sharing platform), aiming to grow a global developer community before the corporate restructuring 3.

Direct CEO oversight signals tighter coordination across AI businesses

  • CEO Eddie Wu took direct control after Lin Junyang, head of the Qwen AI model division, left in early March. Reuters called him the third senior Qwen executive to depart this year, a move tied to steadier coordination in Alibaba’s AI work amid doubts about its direction 4.
  • The shift lands in a crowded China AI market. Regulators have approved several consumer generative AI services such as Baidu’s Ernie Bot, SenseTime’s offering, and models from Baichuan plus Zhipu AI 5.
  • Pricing pressure adds strain. Reuters says leading Chinese models such as DeepSeek and Qwen plus Zhipu’s ChatGLM can cost 10 to 20 times less than U.S. counterparts, raising profitability questions 4.
