🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The $4.8 billion valuation warrants a closer look at user metrics
- The $4.8 billion valuation is being weighed against reports that Kimi’s monthly active users (MAU) were cut by about half, falling from over 36 million to around 18.3 million 1.
- Kimi was also reported to have slipped out of the top five Chinese AI apps by weekly active users, with ByteDance’s Doubao at 155 million, DeepSeek at 81.56 million, and Tencent’s Yuanbao at 20.84 million 1.
- This decline was said to have followed a pullback in Moonshot AI’s marketing spend, while Tencent was reportedly spending up to 1.4 billion RMB in one quarter on user acquisition 1.
- The company’s direction was left murky, since reports of a 2026 IPO plan 2 were at odds with the founder’s recent statement that no short-term listing was planned 3.
Moonshot’s pivot to enterprise opens a door for developers
- Independent software vendors and developers in China can target Moonshot AI’s shift away from consumer AI toward finance, healthcare, and law 1.
- An internal letter reportedly tied that move to revenue gains, including a 4x jump in overseas application programming interface (API) revenue and 170% month-over-month growth in global paying users from September to November 2025 4.
- Since U.S. AI chatbots are unavailable in mainland China, demand for local enterprise tools should stay strong. China-based teams can build regulated-industry apps on Kimi’s API, especially where domestic providers are preferred.
