Alibaba-backed AI startup Moonshot AI launches open-source model
Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI has launched an open-source AI model, Kimi K2, aiming to strengthen its domestic market position.
The model features enhanced coding capabilities and improved performance in agent tasks and tool integration.
Moonshot claims Kimi K2 outperforms other open-source options like DeepSeek’s V3 and offers competitive features compared to US models from companies like Anthropic.
The launch aligns with a broader trend among Chinese tech giants like Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu, which are adopting open-source strategies to showcase their tech capabilities.
In contrast, US firms like OpenAI and Google continue to maintain proprietary models.
Moonshot, founded in 2023 by Tsinghua graduate Yang Zhilin, rose to prominence in 2024 but has faced challenges in 2025, including a drop in app ranking after DeepSeek’s R1 launch.
The company is backed by major investors, including Alibaba.

1️⃣ Open-source AI emerges as China’s competitive strategy against export controls
China’s growing emphasis on open-source AI models represents a deliberate strategic response to U.S. technology restrictions and export controls.
The trend has accelerated significantly since January 2025, when DeepSeek’s R1 model disrupted the global AI landscape with its low-cost, openly available capabilities 1.
This open approach allows Chinese companies to showcase technological prowess while expanding their developer communities and global influence despite hardware restrictions 2.
The strategy creates a contrast with most U.S. tech giants like OpenAI and Google that maintain proprietary models, though Meta stands as a notable exception pursuing an open-source path 3.
Chinese firms including Moonshot, DeepSeek, Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu have all embraced this approach, creating a robust open-source ecosystem that potentially undermines the effectiveness of chip-focused restrictions 2.
This approach aligns with China’s 2017 “New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan,” which explicitly called for establishing China as a global AI leader by 2030 through coordinated efforts across research, industry, and government 4.
