Alibaba adds cloud unit CTO to partnership, ramps up AI focus

Alibaba has appointed Zhou Jingren, chief technology officer of its cloud unit and head of its AI lab Tongyi, as a new member of the Alibaba Partnership, according to people familiar with the decision.

The Partnership, which guides the company’s strategy, previously had 17 members, including co-founders Jack Ma and Joe Tsai.

Zhou joined Alibaba in 2015 and has led several technical divisions, including big data, AI computing, ecommerce search and recommendation systems, and ad technology.

He became CTO of Alibaba Cloud in 2022 and established the Tongyi AI Lab in 2023.

Alibaba has released over 300 multimodal AI models with more than 600 million cumulative downloads and over 170,000 derivative models.
