Akamai, Visa deploy protocol for AI agents in agentic commerce

Akamai Technologies has announced a collaboration with Visa to enhance authentication and fraud prevention for AI agents involved in digital commerce.

Akamai, a US-based cybersecurity and cloud computing firm, will integrate Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol with its own behavioral intelligence and user recognition tools.

The companies said this collaboration aims to help merchants distinguish legitimate AI shopping agents from malicious bots, addressing new security challenges as autonomous agents handle more transactions.

Akamai reported a 300% year-on-year rise in AI bot traffic, with Asia Pacific accounting for nearly 20% of global activity, and commerce alone accounting for nearly half of all activity.

The Trusted Agent Protocol enables merchants to verify both the AI agent and the user it represents, using standard web infrastructure and minimal changes to existing systems.

The initiative is designed to help merchants operate securely as AI-driven transactions become more common.

Payment service providers (PSPs) can build SCA compliant middleware for AI agent payments

  • Third party firms such as payment gateways or identity verification providers can offer middleware that links Trusted Agent Protocol with PSD2 SCA 3. Designs can use tokenization or biometrics with contextual identification from device signals, location, or spending patterns.
  • PSPs can tap existing SCA exemptions 3. One path is whitelisted beneficiaries, which are trusted payees pre approved by the customer. Another is merchant initiated transactions (MITs), which are payments started by the merchant without the customer present after an agreement.
  • 85% of shoppers who used AI to shop reported better experiences 1. AI retail traffic rose 4,700% year over year 1. PSPs or merchant platforms that solve the SCA-agent identity problem can gain share before rules settle.
