AirTrunk plans $30b India investment for data centers
AirTrunk, a Sydney-headquartered data center operator backed by Blackstone, said on June 5 that it plans to invest US$30 billion in India over the next four years.
The investment would add 5 gigawatts of data center capacity. The company entered India in April through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra.
The target is large relative to India’s market. Colocation data center capacity across the country’s top seven cities stood at 977 MW in the second half of 2023 and is projected to reach 3.29 GW by 2028, according to Cushman & Wakefield.
AirTrunk’s Indian development pipeline includes about 600 MW in Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
The Lumina portfolio was described as AI-ready and had up to US$5 billion in future development potential.
India has offered tax breaks to eligible foreign cloud providers that use India-based data center infrastructure. Reliance and Adani said in February that they planned to invest about US$110 billion and US$100 billion, respectively, in AI and data infrastructure.
