Airbnb adds hotels to app in wider travel push

Airbnb is adding hotel listings to its app after a months-long tes.

The rollout starts with boutique hotels in 20 cities including Singapore, New York, Paris, and London, as it tries to widen booking options and serve markets where short-term rentals face limits.

The app will show hotel suggestions for one- or two-night city searches and add a hotel-only filter.

Airbnb is also redesigning the app around stays, experiences, and services.

The company said its AI support bot, which it plans to expand globally in 11 languages, handled 40% of customer queries in the first quarter of 2026.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

This hotel push builds on an older bet

  • Airbnb’s move into hotels grows out of its roughly US$400 million purchase of HotelTonight in 2019, a hotel-booking app built for last-minute stays 1.
  • Boutique and independent properties fit this plan because they often pay steeper OTA commissions through large booking platforms used to sell rooms. Many also lack loyalty programs, which can make Airbnb easier to consider 1.
  • For hotels, Airbnb uses a host-only commission model that usually lands at 14-16% of the booking value, depending on listing type and market 2.
  • That can beat the roughly 15-25% hotel commissions charged by Booking.com or Expedia, which gives hotels another reason to list on Airbnb 3, 2.

The move may shake hotel pricing more than home rentals

  • Existing home-rental hosts will mostly overlap with hotel supply on one- or two-night city trips. Longer family vacations should stay closer to home rentals 1.
  • The bigger jolt may hit rate parity agreements, a hotel industry practice that keeps public room prices aligned across booking platforms 4.
  • Airbnb’s different commission structure gives hotels room to offer a lower base rate there, which could loosen the pricing patterns set by established OTAs 5.
  • The rollout starts in 20 cities. Recent hotel-focused hiring in Asia-Pacific suggests the next phase may lean there 1.
