AI wildfire detection firm Pano AI nets $44m series B

Pano AI, a developer of AI-driven wildfire detection technology, has secured US$44 million in a series B funding round.

This funding brings its total to US$89 million and includes both primary and secondary sales, led by Giant Ventures with participation from Liberty Mutual Strategic Ventures, Tokio Marine Future Fund, Congruent Ventures, Initialized Capital, and Salesforce Ventures.

The company plans to use the funds to expand its wildfire detection and intelligence solutions globally.

Pano AI’s technology offers continuous smoke detection and real-time situational awareness to help first responders identify and respond to fires early.

Since its founding in 2020, Pano AI has grown to support over 250 first responder agencies in the US, Canada, and Australia.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ The rapid evolution of wildfire detection technologies

Pano AI represents the latest advancement in a decades-long technological progression for wildfire detection that has steadily reduced response times.

Early detection systems began with NASA’s MODIS satellite in 1999, which was later enhanced by VIIRS in 2012 with higher spatial resolution capable of detecting smaller fires and nighttime incidents 1.

Before AI-powered solutions, wildfire detection relied heavily on a combination of public reporting, aerial reconnaissance, and satellite systems that often resulted in critical detection delays 2.

The shift to AI-enhanced detection marks a significant leap. While satellite systems like GOES can image areas every 15-30 minutes, camera-based AI systems like Pano’s provide continuous monitoring with nearly instantaneous alerts when smoke is detected 3.

This evolution mirrors a broader industry trend toward integrating multiple data sources. Pano’s combination of ultra-HD cameras and computer vision addresses limitations of earlier single-technology approaches that couldn’t deliver both the speed and accuracy needed for effective early intervention.

2️⃣ The economic calculus of wildfire technology investment

The $44 million investment in Pano AI reflects growing recognition that early detection technologies offer compelling financial returns beyond their environmental benefits.

Research indicates that early-stage fire detection systems could potentially pay for themselves within a single fire season by preventing catastrophic fires. For example, the FUEGO satellite proposal was estimated to potentially save billions in firefighting costs 4.
