Perplexity revenue jumps to $500m, CEO says
Perplexity, an AI search startup, said its revenue rose to US$500 million from US$100 million, while headcount grew 34%, in a post on X by CEO Aravind Srinivas.
Srinivas said the company is targeting 2x revenue growth in 2026 with the same small team.
The startup began as an internal tool for a four-person team with no revenue and has since come full circle through its Computer product.
Founders are using the tool to grow companies, including startups, and small businesses.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The revenue jump is linked to a push into autonomous agents
- Perplexity’s fast revenue growth tracks a shift beyond its AI search engine into autonomous agents, which are AI systems that handle multi-step business tasks with limited human input 1.
- In demos and related posts, the “Computer” product was described as replacing an estimated US$225,000 per year marketing software stack by automating ad optimizations on Meta and Google 2.
- That move toward business automation software feeds the company’s reported annual recurring revenue, a subscription metric that estimates yearly recurring sales, of US$450 million 1.
- Investors have supported the approach through a funding round that valued Perplexity at US$9 billion, about five months after a US$3 billion valuation 3.
Autonomous agents could pressure the core software-as-a-service model
- Perplexity’s plan could shake up the software-as-a-service (software as a service (SaaS)) market, which sells software over the internet by subscription, by moving from employee helpers to agents that run full workflows 2.
- Some companies could cut back on specialized tools when one agent covers parts of the software stack, which strains the per-user pricing model common in enterprise software 2.
- This approach also supports usage-based pricing, where fees tie to tasks completed or value delivered rather than the number of software users 1.
- The structure matches Perplexity’s goal to double revenue in 2026 without a large headcount increase, since output comes from the AI agent’s work.
