AI startup offers local TPU as China seeks to cut Nvidia chips
Zhonghao Xinying, a Hangzhou-based AI chip startup, has introduced a tensor processing unit (TPU) called Chana as China seeks to reduce reliance on Nvidia for advanced chips.
The company, also known as CL Tech, said its Chana TPU went into mass production in 2023 and primarily targets large-scale AI model training.
Zhonghao Xinying reported revenue of 485 million yuan (US$68.4 million) and net profit of 81.3 million yuan in 2023, driven mainly by Chana sales.
In 2024, revenue rose to 598 million yuan and net profit reached 85.9 million yuan, but the first half of this year saw revenue drop to 102 million yuan and a net loss of 144 million yuan.
The startup plans to acquire Shanghai-listed Tip Corporation and has signed an agreement to go public by the end of 2026 or trigger a share buyback clause.
Zhonghao Xinying outsources manufacturing but has not disclosed its foundry partners.
