AI startup MiniMax debuts face match and text-to-video tools
MiniMax has rolled out Video Agent, a new AI-powered tool that generates high-definition videos from simple text prompts.
The tool currently supports 720p resolution at 25 frames per second, with a maximum video length of 6 seconds. The company plans to extend this to 10 seconds in future updates.
Video Agent is powered by MiniMax’s multimodal AI technology, which combines text understanding, image generation, and video synthesis.
The company also offers an API through its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, enabling developers to integrate the tool into their own platforms.
The product enters a crowded field that includes OpenAI’s Sora, Runway’s Gen-3, and Kling AI. But MiniMax sets itself apart with its ease of use and facial consistency feature, aiming to attract content creators and businesses seeking quick-turnaround video solutions.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The democratization of video production continues a 70-year pattern
MiniMax’s video Agent tool represents the latest chapter in the long history of video production democratization that began with early recording technology.
In the 1950s, video recording was prohibitively expensive, with kinescopes costing around $4,000 for a half-hour show and requiring specialized technical knowledge1.
The first commercially available home video system by Ampex in 1963 cost approximately $30,000 (equivalent to over $280,000 today), making video creation inaccessible to all but the wealthiest institutions2.
A significant breakthrough came in 1967 with Sony’s introduction of the Portapak, which made video recording portable and more accessible, leading to the emergence of video art and independent production3.
Each wave of innovation, from camcorders in the 1980s to digital video in the 1990s, has dramatically lowered barriers to entry. AI-generated video follows this pattern by removing the need for cameras, actors, and technical expertise entirely.
2️⃣ AI video tools are addressing historical production bottlenecks
MiniMax’s focus on facial consistency addresses one of the most persistent challenges in video production: maintaining visual continuity across different scenes.
Traditional video production requires careful planning and execution to ensure consistent lighting, positioning, and performance, with professionals dedicating significant resources to continuity management4.
