HD Hyundai Heavy Industries said AI could help modernize US shipyards and speed up efforts to revive the American shipbuilding sector.

The South Korean company, a major player in global shipbuilding, is working with US tech firms including Alphabet Inc.’s Google, Palantir Technologies Inc., and Anduril Industries Inc. on AI-related projects.

South Korea recently pledged US$150 billion to support the US shipbuilding industry as part of a trade deal with President Donald Trump.

Aerin Jungmin Lee, who leads HD Hyundai’s AI strategy, said that combining US computing resources with Korean manufacturing could make shipyards more efficient.

HD Hyundai has already launched an AI-powered translation tool for its workforce and plans to introduce the Shipbuilding AI Master Agent, an AI system for ship design and production, later this year.

The company said AI could help address some of these issues and improve efficiency in shipbuilding.
