Perplexity revenue jumps 50% as it shifts to AI agents
Perplexity, an AI search startup, saw its annual recurring revenue cross US$450 million in March, while revenue surged 50% from a month earlier, according to a Financial Times report, as it pushed further into AI agents and introduced usage-based pricing.
The company has shifted from a chatbot-style search engine toward tools that complete tasks for users, including its Comet browser and Computer agent, while premium users now pay more if they exceed set credit limits.
Perplexity is also expanding its user base, with more than 100 million monthly active users and a growing number of enterprise customers.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Perplexity’s revenue surge comes from aiming beyond mass-market users
- Perplexity executives said monthly active users, or MAUs, are not a target, saying, “You don’t hear us talk about MAUs ever, because we’re not actually on a mission to get as many users as possible” 1.
- They said the company now serves a “boutique set of users” who make “GDP-moving decisions” 1.
- Pricing follows that focus. The Computer tool sits on the top tier, the US$200-per-month Perplexity Max plan. The Enterprise Pro plan costs US$40 per seat per month for companies with fewer than 250 employees that buy directly online 12.
- The subscription push came after a retreat from advertising. TechCrunch reported the company abandoned that business late last year, with executives saying ads weakened users’ trust in answer accuracy 1.
Perplexity bets on orchestration as an AI business model
- Perplexity is not trying to build the best foundational model. It positions its Computer product as an orchestration layer, meaning software that coordinates multiple AI models to complete tasks. CEO Aravind Srinivas wrote that “Perplexity Computer orchestrates 19 models” 3.
- That setup shifts the fight toward product feel and workflow fit. More value can land in the interface that routes the models than in the models themselves.
- Relying on outside models also adds risk. A commenter on Srinivas’s post asked who has the “kill switch” when the system depends on models Perplexity does not own 3.
