AI search startup Exa opens first Asian office in Singapore
Exa, a search technology company, has opened its first Asia office in Singapore to build core engineering for its retrieval stack, saying it wants an Asia-Pacific team in the same time zone as customers and access to local talent.
The company said the new office will work on web-scale infrastructure for its search systems.
Singapore’s Economic Development Board welcomed the launch, saying the move reflects confidence in Singapore as an AI hub and that it looks forward to Exa collaborating with local partners.
Exa said it is rebuilding large-scale web infrastructure for AI-era search and expects the effort to require handling “exabytes of data” as part of a global build.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Exa’s Singapore hub is building core infrastructure for AI-era search
- The Singapore office extends Exa’s Asia-Pacific plans as it builds search infrastructure for AI applications rather than people 1.
- Exa bills by query instead of selling ads. It says customers include Databricks (a data-and-AI software company) and Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud computing platform 2.
- Per-query pricing depends on heavy data collection. Exa says the Singapore team will build large-scale infrastructure such as data pipelines and crawling systems 1.
The race to build AI’s search and retrieval backbone is expanding globally
- The Singapore launch fits a wider industry push to tailor search and retrieval tools for AI systems. Many teams are reworking how search runs for machines 1.
- Exa calls its goal a “data layer for AI applications.” It says AI search could grow into a large market. The company has raised $85 million at a $700 million valuation 34.
- Exa wants engineers in Singapore to share working hours with customers. It aims to hire local talent as it grows across Asia-Pacific 1.
