AI use in online shopping hits 82% in Indonesia: report

AI use in online shopping is rising in Indonesia, but many consumers still do not trust AI to handle transactions, according to a YouGov study with Visa.

The study found 82% of Indonesian consumers have used AI for product searches, price comparisons, or order tracking, and it projected that figure could reach 95% soon.

Only 32% said they were open to making purchases through AI, while Vira Widiyasari, Visa Indonesia country manager, said the main concerns were data security and fee transparency, with hidden charges also a factor.

Across Asia-Pacific, 74% of consumers have used AI to support shopping, but 26% were unwilling to share personal data without security assurances, while openness to AI-based transactions reached 42% in India and Vietnam.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The ‘trust gap’ in AI shopping is building a new security market

  • Consumer hesitation is pushing a new layer of financial technology built for AI agents, software that can search, book, or pay on a user’s behalf 1.
  • Visa is working on tools such as the Trusted Agent Protocol to separate legitimate AI shopping agents from bots during commerce flows 1.
  • Visa says it has used AI in payments since 1993. It has spent decades using AI to spot fraud and score risk, and it is adapting risk-scoring plus tokenisation for “agentic commerce,” where AI systems start or complete transactions 2, 1.
  • In Indonesia, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) issued AI governance guidance for banks as a minimum reference point for responsible implementation 3.

AI will change commerce from website design to fraud prevention

  • As AI starts buying, retailer and marketplace results may rely more on checkout, catalog, and identity systems that work smoothly with AI agents than on a website’s user interface 4.
  • This shift brings fresh weak spots. Visa flags token provisioning, issuing a digital substitute for a card number for payments, as a possible fraud route as automated experiences grow 1.
  • Digital maturity does not always bring comfort. Visa’s study found Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore show above-average caution on AI shopping and data-use expectations, while India and Vietnam lead regional openness to AI for online purchases 5.
  • As digital experience rises, expectations for security and control can rise too. That trend can expand demand for trust and safety solutions 6.
