AI humanoid robot Ai-Da unveils portrait of King Charles III
Ai-Da, an AI-powered humanoid robot developed in Oxford by art specialist Aidan Meller and built by Engineered Arts, unveiled a portrait of King Charles III at the United Nations’ AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva.
The display was authorized by Buckingham Palace, though Ai-Da has not met the King.
Meller chose King Charles as a subject due to the intersection of technology and humanity’s relationship with the environment.
Ai-Da uses cameras and AI algorithms to create her artwork.
The captured images are processed into real-time coordinates that guide her robotic arm to paint or draw.
Meller said working with Ai-Da helps explore broader questions about humanity and technology.
In 2024, Ai-Da’s triptych of Alan Turing sold at auction for over £1 million (US$1.3 million). She also painted a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in 2023.
