AI growth to drive 38% rise in US grid power demand

Electricity demand on PJM Interconnection LLC, the largest grid in the US, is projected to rise significantly by 2035 due to the growth of AI technologies, according to a new report.

PJM anticipates a 38% increase in peak summer electricity demand, equivalent to a rise of nearly 58 gigawatt from 2024 levels.

That is more than double the current peak demand of the New England electricity grid.

The surge in demand is linked to the rapid expansion of AI data centers, which require massive amounts of electricity.

This will put considerable strain on the aging US power grid.
