AI firms risk $800b funding gap as costs outpace revenue: report
AI firms may face an US$800 billion revenue gap by 2030 as spending on infrastructure outpaces earnings, according to Bain & Co.’s Global Technology Report.
Bain, a US-based consulting firm, projects that AI companies will require US$2 trillion in annual revenue to support data centers and computing needs by 2030.
However, the report estimates actual revenue will fall short, with monetization of services like ChatGPT lagging behind the surge in demand and investment.
Major technology firms including Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta are expected to increase AI spending to over US$500 billion annually by the next decade, Bloomberg Intelligence said.
Bain also forecasts global AI computing requirements could reach 200 gigawatts by 2030, with the US accounting for half.
The report highlights supply chain and power constraints as potential risks, while noting continued investment in areas like autonomous AI agents and quantum computing.
Humanoid robots are also seeing early investment but remain dependent on human supervision.
