AI expert Yao Shunyu leaves Anthropic over anti-China stance

Yao Shunyu, a Chinese AI researcher, has left Anthropic and joined Google DeepMind, citing strong opposition to Anthropic’s stance labeling China as an “adversarial nation.”

Yao, who worked on the Claude 3.7 Sonnet model, said the company’s rhetoric toward China played a key role in his decision.

He added that there was another major reason for his departure that he could not disclose due to confidentiality.

Anthropic recently began restricting access to its services for subsidiaries of Chinese companies.

Yao has joined Google DeepMind as a senior research scientist on the Gemini team, which develops foundational AI models.

His move comes as Anthropic’s position on China aligns with a broader trend among US AI firms, while DeepMind’s leadership has advocated for US-China collaboration in AI safety.
