🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
AI servers lift Taiwan’s exports, 2026 outlook in view
- AI hardware drove October’s upswing. Electronic components rose 27.7% and semiconductor shipments climbed 29.2% 1. ICT (information and communications technology) and audiovisual gear, largely graphics cards and servers, jumped 86.9% 2. With electronic components they made about 75% of September exports 2. Legacy sectors stayed soft with transport equipment down 2.4% and basic metals up 1.7% 2.
- Momentum could ease in 2026 as global AI server shipments may rise a bit over 20% 3, down from 46% in 2024 4. A shift from training to inference is underway, and Nvidia’s GB200 or GB300 rack rollouts, next-generation server platforms built around new accelerators, may slip 5. Front-loading, which means pulling orders forward to avoid US tariffs, shifted shipments into early 2025 6 and risks Q4 2025 order cuts that hit early 2026.
Taiwan AI server ODMs (original design manufacturers) and chip suppliers create openings
- Vendors of semiconductor tools, factory automation, and materials can plug into capacity. Imports of capital gear reached US$76.9 billion in the first nine months, up 55.5% 7. Match outreach to ODMs’ 2025 to 2026 ramps. Nvidia’s Blackwell platforms, its next-generation AI chip architecture, could lift AI server revenue by nearly 48% in 2025 3.
- Logistics and trade compliance firms can chase surging US lanes as shipments to the US rose 144.3% to US$21.135 billion in October 1. B2B fintech and trade finance providers can meet working capital needs after Taiwan’s imports climbed 25.1% in September to support export output 2.
