AI drives hiring surge in chips, robotics in China
In China, semiconductors, electronics, and robotics are leading hiring as AI lifts demand for hardware and engineering talent, data from Chinese recruitment platforms 51job and Zhaopin showed.
51job said electronics and semiconductors drew 1.5 times more applications than the other sectors.
Zhaopin said robotics recruitment rose 36.6% year-on-year, and demand for AI engineers was three times supply.
Average annual pay reached 650,000 yuan (US$95,000) for generative AI, and 550,000 yuan (US$81,000) for chip design roles.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Policy priorities and export controls are adding urgency to China’s talent squeeze
- A government drive for “new quality productive forces” plus U.S. export controls on advanced foreign-made chips are pushing Chinese semiconductor firms to build alternatives, which raises demand for engineering hires 1.
- AI-related job postings rose about 12-fold year on year in the first two months of the year, reaching 26.23% of all new-economy job postings, up from 2.29% a year earlier 2.
- MIIT data cited by HiredChina.com puts China’s integrated circuit talent gap at 300,000 in H1 2024, up 25% year on year 3.
- People’s Daily cites Maimai, a Chinese professional networking platform, that puts the supply-demand ratio for high-performance computing engineers, who design systems for very demanding computing tasks, at 0.15, which works out to about seven openings per candidate 2.
The hiring boom is influencing talent flows and China’s internal talent geography
- Layoffs plus visa pressure in the U.S. are bringing some Chinese engineers back to China, based on CNBC interviews 4.
- Zhilian, also known as Zhaopin, data cited by CNBC lists an average monthly pay of 20,035 yuan (US$2,900) for in-demand algorithm engineers, or about US$35,000 a year, which sits far below top U.S. compensation 4.
- Job applications are spreading beyond Beijing and Shanghai, with Suzhou and Wuxi in Jiangsu, plus Dongguan in Guangdong, drawing more engineering talent 1.
