AI-driven chip boom lifts S Korea corporate earnings by 20.6%

South Korean corporate earnings rose 20.6% year-on-year in 2024, reaching 181.9 trillion won (US$123.9 billion), according to government data.

The Ministry of Data and Statistics reported that this marks a rebound after two years of declines.

Manufacturing companies saw pre-tax profits hit 123.5 trillion won, up 32% from 2023.

Officials cited higher semiconductor exports, driven by AI demand, as a key factor.

Corporate R&D spending increased 21.4% to 97 trillion won in 2024.

Total sales for the surveyed firms climbed 5.2% to 3,371.1 trillion won.

Of the 14,922 firms surveyed, 40.3% had subsidiaries in South Korea or overseas, with the largest number in China, followed by the US and Vietnam.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Manufacturing’s 32% profit surge masks uneven gains across sectors

  • Sector profits rose 32% to 123.5 trillion won, led by semiconductors, yet the summary lacks detail on non-chip firms 1.
  • Manufacturing captured 54.9% of business expansions so services may face margin pressure if their rebound trailed the 20.6% on-year profit rise 2.
  • Korea’s AI chip market sits at USD 15 billion, which implies chipmakers took outsized gains 3.
  • Sales rose 5.2% to 3,371.1 trillion won, while profits climbed 20.6%, so margins likely widened more than volumes grew 1.

Semiconductor equipment and Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tool vendors should target South Korea’s R&D surge

  • R&D outlays rose 21.4% to 97 trillion won 1. That jump boosts near-term demand for AI infrastructure and chip design tools (EDA software) plus testing platforms (hardware with software used to verify chip performance).
  • The 2025 government R&D budget is Korean won (KRW) 29.7 trillion, up 11.8% from 2024, with allocations that include AI-semiconductors and quantum technology 4.
  • AI Software Solutions lead Korea’s semiconductor R&D market at USD 2.1 billion, with AI-enabled EDA tools and testing platforms among the main segments 5.
  • Global chip equipment plus EDA providers can tap demand from the 40.3% of Korean firms with overseas subsidiaries 1. Those units sit mainly in China (21.9%) and the US (16.4%), which opens cross-border purchasing.
