US startup Crusoe drops $1.25b turbine deal for AI data centers
Crusoe, a Denver-based startup that builds AI data centers, has dropped plans to buy stationary gas turbines from Boom Supersonic for projects including Abilene, Texas.
The deal had called for US$1.25 billion of purchases across 29 turbines, with first deliveries expected in 2027.
The Abilene site is a 900-megawatt AI campus that Crusoe says will support Microsoft AI infrastructure.
Crusoe’s Texas buildout has also been described as a phased mix of grid power, demand response, and behind-the-meter resources.
Boom Supersonic, a Denver-based company developing the Overture supersonic passenger jet, had positioned its Superpower unit to sell natural gas turbines for AI data centers using technology adapted from its aircraft propulsion work.
The canceled order is also notable because Crusoe had been Boom’s lead initial customer for the turbine business.
Boom CEO Blake Scholl said other customers were in the pipeline, but he did not name them.
