AI copyright expert drops Meta as client over policy shifts

Mark Lemley, an intellectual property lawyer and Stanford Law professor, recently announced that he would no longer represent Meta as part of his client list.

This marked a significant shift, as he had been a key legal advocate for tech giant in various intellectual property matters.

In an interview, he cited the company’s policy directions and broader changes in the tech industry as reasons for his decision.

Lemley expressed concerns about trends in the tech sector, such as alignments with political figures and diminished support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

He acknowledged that his professional position allows him the freedom to distance himself from clients whose values conflict with his own.

Despite parting ways with Meta, Lemley continues to support the company in ongoing AI-related copyright disputes.
