AI coding startup Cognition in talks for $25b raise

AI coding startup Cognition AI is in early talks to raise hundreds of millions of dollars or more at about a US$25 billion valuation, , according to people familiar with the matter.

Investor interest has picked up following SpaceX’s deal to acquire rival Cursor. Cognition President Russell Kaplan said the company has seen increased interest from customers and potential hires after the announcement.

Founded in 2023, Cognition sells AI coding tools to businesses, including its flagship product Devin. The company previously raised US$400 million at a US$10.2 billion valuation after acquiring Windsurf assets.

Cognition’s valuation rests on AI doing software work beyond coding help

  • Devin differs from tools that suggest code in an editor. Cognition built it to work more like a remote junior software engineer 1, 2.
  • It runs in a sandboxed environment (an isolated testing setup) with its own browser and command line. It can take a request, complete the work, and submit a finished pull request (a proposed code change for review) for human review 3.
  • Cognition targets large companies. Some commentary says pricing is private and could be high. The company has also been publicly described elsewhere as charging US$500 a month for a team plan 2, 4.
  • Nubank, a large Brazilian digital bank, used a “fleet of Devins” for a large code migration. Other companies use the product to fix security vulnerabilities in parallel, which treats it as scalable software engineering capacity 5, 6.

AI agents may move some software engineers toward oversight

  • Autonomous agents like Devin may pull some senior software engineers away from writing code and toward reviewing AI-generated work 2.
  • The job shifts toward splitting hard problems into clear tasks, shaping system architecture, and checking generated code with care 6.
  • This also adds new team challenges. Software engineering groups need tighter quality checks against “confident hallucinations” (plausible-looking but incorrect code) that can pass basic tests 2.
  • If companies handle the shift well, they may take on work once seen as too expensive, including legacy system upgrades. That could change the economics of cutting technical debt (the accumulated cost of outdated or inefficient software choices) 6.
