US AI chipmaker Groq in talks to raise $600m at $6b valuation
Groq, a US-based AI chip startup, is reportedly in talks to raise US$600 million at a valuation close to US$6 billion, according to sources.
The potential new funding round is said to be led by Austin-based investment firm Disruptive.
Groq raised US$640 million at a US$2.8 billion valuation in a previous round, reportedly doubling its valuation in about a year.
The company has raised about US$1 billion in total funding, including the US$640 million round.
Recent investors include BlackRock, Neuberger Berman, Type One Ventures, Cisco, KDDI, and Samsung Catalyst Fund.
Founded in 2016 by Jonathan Ross, a former Google engineer involved in developing the Tensor Processing Unit chip, Groq has formed an exclusive partnership with Bell Canada to power the telco’s large AI infrastructure project.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Enterprise partnerships validate specialized AI chip performance advantages
Groq’s valuation doubling to $6 billion reflects major enterprise clients choosing their chips over established alternatives for large-scale deployments.
Bell Canada selected Groq as the exclusive inference provider for their 500 MW national AI infrastructure project, which will deliver over 20 million tokens per second across six data centers1.
This partnership demonstrates that Groq’s Language Processing Units achieve meaningful performance advantages, with independent testing showing their chips process 10 to 30 tokens per second compared to traditional GPUs2.
The enterprise validation is particularly significant given that NVIDIA currently holds 92% of the data center GPU market3.
When major telecommunications companies commit to multi-year infrastructure partnerships worth hundreds of millions, it signals that the performance claims translate to real operational advantages at scale.
2️⃣ AI hardware market growth creates room for specialized competitors
Groq’s rapid valuation increase occurs within an AI hardware market that exploded from $17 billion in 2022 to $125 billion in 20244.
