US AI chip, cloud company Groq raises $650m

Groq, a US AI chip and cloud company, said on June 22 that it raised US$650 million in a round led by Dallas-based Disruptive and Fort Lauderdale-based Infinitum, as it shifts further to cloud inference after Nvidia’s deal for its technology and senior staff.

About six months earlier, Groq and Nvidia announced a non-exclusive licensing agreement covering Groq’s inference technology, and that founder Jonathan Ross, president Sunny Madra, and other employees would join Nvidia.

Groq did not disclose a new valuation. It was last valued at US$6.9 billion after a US$750 million round in September, and Simon Edwards became CEO after the Nvidia deal.

Groq said it is shifting focus to GroqCloud, an AI inference platform that offers public, private, and hybrid deployments, including on-premises systems. Groq also said McLaren uses the service.
