Microsoft researchers have found that AI chatbots like Copilot are most likely to automate tasks related to communication and information sharing.

Microsoft Copilot is the US-based tech firm’s generative AI chatbot, formerly known as Bing Copilot.

The study analyzed 200,000 anonymized conversations between US users and Copilot, identifying roles such as translators, historians, and writers as the most exposed to AI-driven task automation.

Jobs that involve physical labor, such as phlebotomists, nursing assistants, and hazardous materials removal workers, showed less overlap with AI chatbot capabilities.

The researchers noted that while AI can support many research, writing, and communication tasks, it is not yet able to fully perform any single occupation.

They also cautioned that their findings focused on large language models and do not account for other types of AI that could impact jobs involving machinery or physical work.

The paper did not address whether AI adoption would lead to job losses or gains.
