AI benchmarking platform Chatbot Arena evolves into a new company
Chatbot Arena, a UC Berkeley-backed platform for comparing AI models, is now evolving into a company called LMArena under Arena Intelligence Inc.
Launched in early 2023 by UC Berkeley’s Sky Computing Lab, Chatbot Arena has allowed users to compare AI models and vote on their performance via leaderboards.
LMArena will continue to operate as an open and neutral testing platform.
The new company will be co-founded by Angelopoulos, Wei-Lin Chiang, another former UC Berkeley postdoctoral researcher, and Ion Stoica, a professor and tech entrepreneur.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ The growing importance of neutral AI model evaluation
As AI models converge in capabilities, objective benchmarking platforms like Chatbot Arena are becoming increasingly critical for the industry and users alike.
The research shows that leading models like ChatGPT, Claude, and DeepSeek are becoming more competitive with each other, making it harder to distinguish their technical differences without standardized evaluation 1.
Independent testing has revealed surprising performance variations across models. For instance, while ChatGPT Plus excels at coding tasks, platforms like GitHub Copilot performed poorly in standardized tests despite their popularity 2.
This explains why Chatbot Arena’s million monthly visitors and leaderboards have become influential in the AI ecosystem. They provide transparency in a field where marketing claims often outpace actual capabilities.
The core principles of AI testing cited by experts (accuracy, reliability, fairness, explainability, and scalability) align well with what Chatbot Arena’s head-to-head comparisons offer the market 3.
2️⃣ The challenges of scaling AI ventures from academia to industry
LMArena’s journey from UC Berkeley research project to commercial venture highlights a crucial transition path for AI innovation in today’s market.
Recent industry analysis shows 72% of large firms now use AI weekly, creating substantial commercial opportunities for platforms that can validate model performance before major investments 4.
Smaller AI ventures like LMArena face specific challenges that bridge software and hardware sectors, requiring substantial upfront investments while maintaining rapid growth to secure continued funding 1.
