Coatue, Lightspeed lead $65m seed round for AI startup Sycamore

Sycamore, a startup building software to help enterprises build, secure, and orchestrate AI agents, raised a US$65 million seed round led by Coatue and Lightspeed.

The company was founded by Sri Viswanath, CEO and a former Coatue investor who previously held engineering leadership roles at Sun Microsystems, VMware, Groupon, and Atlassian.

Viswanath said Sycamore is building an “agentic orchestration” layer that can span tasks such as coding and back-end operations, and he said it has gained traction with some large enterprise customers without naming them.

Other backers include Abstract Ventures, Dell Technologies Capital, 8VC, Fellows Fund, and E14 Fund, and angels include Bob McGrew, Lip-Bu Tan, Ali Ghodsi, Frederic Kerrest, Soham Majumdar, and Mike Knoop.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

### A founder’s background and network explain the unusually large seed round

  • Sycamore raised a US$65 million seed round, far above the US median of US$2.6 million in the first quarter of 2024 1.
  • The scale ties to founder Sri Viswanath’s résumé. He previously invested at Coatue, which leads the round, plus he held senior engineering roles at Sun Microsystems, VMware, Groupon, and Atlassian 2.
  • A seed round this large and “pre-emptive” gives Sycamore time. It can hire pricey AI specialists and build a product with staying power before rivals appear 3.

### The investment signals a new battleground for enterprise AI infrastructure

  • The round puts money behind “agentic orchestration.” It tackles a growing headache for enterprise IT teams as they deploy many specialized AI agents rather than one model 4.
  • An orchestration layer for AI agents echoes the rise of Kubernetes (an open-source system for managing and scaling containerized software). Kubernetes became the default for handling application containers when companies moved to microservices 5.
  • Sycamore’s raise may speed up a race. Big cloud platforms plus enterprise software players like Microsoft and Google could build or buy similar orchestration tools to steer the new AI software stack 2.
