🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Adobe’s strategic approach to AI builds on decades of successful technological pivots

The Adobe-Synthesia partnership continues Adobe’s long-established pattern of adapting to technological shifts through strategic investments rather than just internal development.

Since its founding in 1982, Adobe has consistently evolved through both innovation and strategic acquisitions, from PostScript to Photoshop to Creative Cloud, maintaining market leadership through multiple technological eras 1.

This investment follows Adobe’s AI integration path that formally began with Adobe Sensei in 2019, their AI and machine learning framework that powers features across Adobe’s product suite, including Premiere Pro’s Auto Reframe video feature 2.

The move aligns with Adobe’s transition from being a “point product” company to a comprehensive technology platform provider, a strategy first articulated during Bruce Chizen’s leadership in the early 2000s 3.

This latest partnership follows Adobe’s unsuccessful $20 billion attempt to acquire Figma and shows how the company continues leveraging external innovation to enhance its creative technology ecosystem, particularly in emerging AI capabilities.

2️⃣ AI video generation reaches enterprise-grade maturity amid significant losses

Synthesia’s achievement of $100 million in annual recurring revenue marks a significant milestone in enterprise adoption of AI-generated video, despite substantial operating losses.

The company reported £25.7 million in revenue for 2023 alongside a pre-tax loss of £25.2 million, demonstrating the substantial investment still required in this emerging market despite growing commercial adoption 4.

Synthesia’s enterprise focus has been remarkably successful, with 70% of Fortune 100 companies now using their platform, validating the business utility of AI-generated video beyond experimental applications 4.
