Accenture ties AI use to leadership promotion

Accenture has informed senior staff that regular use of its AI tools will be necessary for promotion to leadership roles, according to a Financial Times report.

The company confirmed to CNBC that this policy was communicated via an internal email, saying AI adoption is part of its strategy to serve clients effectively.

The policy applies to associate directors and senior managers. Staff in 12 European countries and those on US government contracts are exempt.

In September, Accenture said it aims to upskill its 780,000 global workforce on AI fundamentals and has already retrained 550,000 employees.

CEO Julie Sweet warned that staff unable to reskill may face layoffs.

The company recently partnered with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Palantir Technologies to improve AI training and tools for employees.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Internal resistance and financial pressure are shaping Accenture’s approach

  • Accenture’s policy aims at a specific issue inside the firm. associate directors and senior managers have been more reluctant to use the company’s internal AI tools than junior staff 1.
  • Some employees blame tool quality, calling Accenture’s internal AI tools “broken slop generators” 1.
  • The move lands during market strain, with Accenture’s share price down 42% over the past 12 months 1.
  • Generative and agentic AI revenues still tripled year over year to $2.7 billion, which supports the company’s “reinvention” message to clients and investors 2.

Accenture’s policy marks a move from encouragement to mandates in corporate AI adoption

  • Accenture’s internal push could serve as an example for other corporations that struggle to get senior staff to use AI, while consultancies press hesitant employees to adopt the technology 1.
  • This mandate-first approach could widen the gap between Accenture’s executive plan and what employees experience while working with the tools.
  • Accenture’s own research puts worker confidence at 38% on whether their organizations can respond effectively to technological disruption, and employee enjoyment of AI is falling 3.
  • Tracking login counts may steer teams toward surface-level use instead of the “knowledge productivity” Accenture promotes, which could reward performative adoption over real innovation 4.
