Accel leads $85m round for Indian online pharmacy firm Truemeds

Truemeds, an Indian online pharmacy focused on generic drugs, has secured US$85 million in a new funding round led by Accel, with participation from Peak XV Partners, WestBridge Capital, and InfoEdge Ventures.

The Mumbai-based company, founded in 2019, recommends cheaper generic alternatives to branded medicines and now serves 500,000 monthly customers across over 20,000 Indian postal codes.

Its valuation has risen to over US$400 million, up from US$110 million two years ago.

Truemeds said revenue rose 66% year-on-year to US$57 million in the last financial year, with 75% of its customers from tier-2 cities and beyond.

The company plans to expand into diagnostics by partnering with pathology labs and piloting lab testing services in some tier-2 cities in the coming months.

It also intends to increase its fulfillment center count by 300% from 19 over the next year and open a Bengaluru office to invest further in engineering and product development.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Generic medicine focus addresses India’s largest pharmaceutical opportunity

Truemeds’ strategy to prioritize generic medicines over delivery speed aligns with substantial market demand that competitors have largely overlooked.

Generic medicines already represent 80% of India’s pharmaceutical market, with the overall sector projected to reach $55 billion by 20251.

Research shows around 75% of consumers prefer generic medications, indicating significant existing demand for Truemeds’ core value proposition1.

The company’s success serving primarily tier-2 cities and beyond, where 75% of their customers are located, makes strategic sense given these markets typically have higher price sensitivity and less access to affordable healthcare alternatives.

While competitors like PharmEasy saw their valuation collapse from $5.6 billion to under $600 million, Truemeds’ focus on cost savings rather than rapid delivery appears better positioned for sustainable growth in India’s price-conscious healthcare market.

2️⃣ Consumer education remains the critical challenge and competitive advantage

Truemeds’ emphasis on conducting 10-12 million annual consultations reflects a widespread industry challenge that creates both barriers and competitive advantages.
