Accel India leads $6.7m funding in agritech firm AgroStar

Agritech startup AgroStar has raised $6.7 million in funding from existing investors, with Accel India leading the round.

Other participants include Aavishkaar India, Bertelsmann, Evolvence India, Chiratae Ventures, and Hero Enterprises.

Founded in 2013 by Sitanshu Sheth and Shardul Sheth, the Pune-based company uses data and technology to provide agricultural inputs to farmers. It also aims to address knowledge gaps in farming practices.

AgroStar operates in 11 Indian states, including Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh. The company claims to serve over nine million farmers through its digital platform.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Indian agritech funding reflects sector’s massive growth potential despite profitability challenges

AgroStar’s $6.7 million raise comes amid substantial investment activity in Indian agritech, with nearly 100 startups collectively raising $1.33 billion between January 2020 and June 2022 alone 1.

The sector has seen explosive growth, with over 1,300 agritech startups launching in just six years, driven by agriculture’s importance to India’s economy, contributing 20% to GDP while employing 45% of the workforce 2.

Despite this influx of capital, profitability remains elusive for many players including AgroStar, whose losses surged 89% to ₹142 crore in FY22 even as revenue grew 88% to ₹260 crore 3.

The contrast between rapid revenue growth and widening losses highlights the “grow now, profit later” strategy prevalent across the sector, with investors betting on technology’s potential to transform a traditional industry facing significant inefficiencies.

2️⃣ Vertical integration becoming essential strategy for agritech survival and differentiation

AgroStar’s 2022 acquisition of INI Farms, mentioned in the original article, represents a strategic pivot toward vertical integration by connecting both ends of the agricultural value chain, input supply and produce export.

This acquisition has enabled AgroStar to expand beyond its initial focus on agricultural inputs and advisory services to also facilitate farmer access to international markets across 25 countries, creating a more comprehensive ecosystem 4.

The move positions AgroStar against well-funded competitors like DeHaat and Ninjacart in an increasingly competitive landscape where no single player has yet achieved unicorn status despite significant funding 1.

Through this integration strategy, AgroStar’s platform has reportedly helped farmers increase crop yields by 30-100%, demonstrating how connecting multiple parts of the value chain can deliver measurable improvements in agricultural productivity 4.
