Accel-backed used-car platform Spinny nets $30m series F

Spinny, a used-car marketplace based in Gurugram, has raised US$30 million from WestBridge Capital in its series F funding round.

This brings the total raised in the round to about US$170 million.

Earlier this year, the company secured US$131 million from Accel, Fundamentum, Tiger Global, and Elevation Capital.

The round included both primary and secondary investments, with part of it used for an employee stock option plan buyback.

Sources estimate Spinny’s valuation to be between US$1.5 billion and US$1.7 billion.

The company plans to use the new capital to set up a non-banking financial company and expand operations, especially with Autocar India, which it acquired in March.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Vertical integration becoming crucial in used car marketplaces

Spinny’s latest moves reflect a broader industry shift toward complete end-to-end service offerings rather than just marketplace functionality.

The company is strategically expanding beyond its core business by establishing an NBFC arm and integrating automotive media content through its Autocar India acquisition 12.

This vertical integration pattern aligns with global industry trends where successful used car platforms are differentiating through financing solutions and content, as the global used car financing market alone reached $46.4 billion in 2024 3.

The approach addresses a fundamental challenge in the used car industry, information asymmetry and trust, which Spinny has tackled since its founding in 2015 when the Indian market was characterized by opacity and buyer mistrust 4.

By controlling more elements of the customer journey from research (media) to purchase (marketplace) to financing (NBFC), Spinny is building a comprehensive ecosystem in a market projected to grow from 2.8 million to 8 million units in India 5.

2️⃣ Flat valuations signal maturing used car marketplace sector

Despite raising $170 million in its Series F round, Spinny’s valuation has remained flat at $1.5-1.7 billion, indicating a shift from the growth-at-all-costs mentality of previous years 167.
