Abu Dhabi’s Lunate said to invest $1b in OpenAI investor MGX

Abu Dhabi-based asset manager Lunate is in talks to invest up to US$1 billion in MGX, a state-backed AI investor, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Discussions are ongoing, and no final agreement has been reached.

MGX has previously invested in companies such as OpenAI and xAI, and has teamed up with BlackRock and Microsoft on a US$30 billion plan to build data warehouses and energy infrastructure.

MGX is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi AI firm G42 and Mubadala Investment Co.

Lunate manages capital through multiple strategies and has deployed US$13.5 billion since its founding two years ago.

The firm raised about US$17 billion for its flagship funds in 2024 and is targeting more for future funds, Bloomberg reported.

MGX is overseen by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who plays a key role in Abu Dhabi’s AI investments.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Lunate’s US$1 billion looks small next to MGX’s existing firepower

  • Backed by Mubadala, Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund with US$330 billion under management 1, MGX already set a goal to manage US$100 billion 2. A US$1 billion check from asset manager Lunate helps at the margin.
  • It joined the US$6.6 billion OpenAI secondary sale 3. It joined a consortium that agreed to acquire Aligned Data Centers for about US$40 billion, subject to approvals 4. It backs the US$100 billion Stargate plan and intends to contribute about US$7 billion 1.
  • MGX co-founded the AI Infrastructure Partnership (AIP) 4. Its main backers include the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA) and Temasek, Singapore’s state-owned investment company 4. AIP initially targets US$30 billion 4.

Vendors can bid on AIP’s US$30 billion buildout

  • MGX works with BlackRock and Microsoft to unlock up to US$30 billion for AI data centers 5. That will create tenders across the US and partner countries. Construction and power equipment firms can bid. Cooling and networking vendors can too.
  • Suppliers in cooling, power, and networking should watch for AIP tenders 6. The program targets next-generation AI data centers and enabling infrastructure 6.
  • Energy infrastructure providers can pursue work tied to AIP’s power buildout 6. GE Vernova is General Electric’s energy business 6. NextEra Energy is a major US utility and renewables developer 6. They are collaborating with AIP on scaling energy solutions 6. Contracts may cover renewables and battery storage. Projects may include gas-fired and nuclear generation systems.
